When weeds grow faster than cane – the whole crop is at risk!
"Ten days after planting, all I could see was… weeds. No cane in sight, just thick green weeds!"
This is common in most sugarcane-growing areas in Vietnam, especially when:
- Cane is planted at the start of the rainy season
- Pre-emergence weed control is not applied right after planting
- The soil holds many weed seeds and is not cleaned before the season
Consequences:
- The cane lacks light → weak growth
- Competition for nutrients → slow growth, yellow leaves
- More pests and diseases such as thrips, stem borers and red spider mites
- Repeated weeding with short-lived results
Weeds – taking away sugarcane's "chance to grow"
| Harm | Effect in the field |
|---|---|
| Take up nutrients faster than cane | Cane lacks nutrients, grows poorly |
| Block light and cast shade | Cane cannot photosynthesise well |
| Shelter pests and diseases | Fast spread while cane is young |
| Grow too early | Smother cane shoots – the crop loses its head start |
In practice: cane needs 7–10 days to root – weeds need only 2–4 days to take over the soil
Weeds:
- Grow from seeds and underground stems; their roots survive for years
- Are always "waiting" for moisture + warm temperatures → grow faster than cane
Without measures to stop weeds from the start, you will need 3–5 weeding rounds per year → higher costs – lower yields
✅ Solution: Control weeds right after planting – with a pre-emergence herbicide
Spray herbicide 1–2 days after planting, while the soil is still moist
Use a product that does not affect cane buds, targeting broadleaf weeds, grasses and sedges
Add a sticker–penetrant adjuvant for better results
Xinron 800WG is one such solution – designed for sugarcane land, with strong activity for clean weed control in the critical stage.
