Anthracnose – a disease that "silently destroys" farmers' crops
Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum spp., not only causes leaf drop, shoot blight and fruit rot, it also spreads quickly and is hard to control, especially in wet conditions or with incorrect care. Anthracnose is considered a major cause of yield loss in many fruit and long-term industrial crop areas in Vietnam.
Direct economic damage from anthracnose
| Crop | Common damage |
|---|---|
| Mango | Stem-end rot, deep sunken lesions → drop before harvest |
| Durian | Flower blight, mass drop → early-season yield loss |
| Coffee | Berries dry black in patches, clear yield reduction |
| Pepper | Young shoots wilt, branch nodes rot black, damaged posts |
| Chilli, watermelon | Ripe fruit with black spots, lower marketability, not exportable |
Average level of damage from anthracnose:
- Direct loss of 20–40% of output
- Lost market value: 30–60% lower sales value
- Higher costs: continuous spraying, pruning, labour, replanting
Fast spread – increasing sharply in the rainy season and high humidity
Colletotrichum spp. spreads mainly through:
- Rainwater, wind and insects carrying spores
- Infected pruning tools
- Fallen leaves and diseased branches not collected
A small lesion on one leaf can spread to the whole tree – the whole orchard – within a few days, especially in densely planted areas with closed canopies.
Risk of outbreaks if not controlled from the start
- The disease recurs over many seasons, surviving in diseased plant residue or soil
- Plants stay weakened for a long time and are more prone to nematodes, bacteria or root rot
- Lower fruit set, slow recovery, unbalanced growth
Measures to limit anthracnose damage
- Proactively clean the orchard regularly and prune for ventilation
- Use broad-spectrum – systemic – long-lasting fungicides
- Spray preventively on schedule before flowering or after rain
