Common coffee pests and diseases – how to manage them

Why manage pests and diseases well in coffee?

Coffee is a perennial crop; without timely prevention, trees will:

  • Lose vigour, drop leaves, produce small fruit
  • Flower unevenly
  • Give lower yields and bean quality
  • Be reinfested easily, with fast spread in the rainy season

Common insect pests on coffee

1. Mealybugs (Planococcus spp.)

  • Concentrate on young tips, leaf stalks and feeder roots
  • Suck sap and excrete honeydew that favours sooty mould
  • Cause stunted tips, weak flowering and fruit drop

Solution:

Use Pilaravia 155SC – a product with two-way systemic action, reaching pests on stems and roots

Combine with Viet-up 90 for better penetration and adhesion, especially in the rainy season

2. Black citrus aphid (Toxoptera aurantii)

  • Damage young leaves, causing curling and distortion
  • Multiply quickly in the early dry season

Solution:

Use systemic products; spray early when density is low

Use a sticker to reduce product loss when spraying

3. Stem and branch borers (Xyleborus spp.)

  • Bore into stems, causing dieback and shortening tree life
  • Very hard to treat if not detected early

Solution:

Cut off bored branches and destroy them away from the garden

Spray preventively with strongly systemic products

Common diseases

1. Pink disease (Erythricium salmonicolor)

  • Causes branch rot, wilting and gradual leaf drop
  • Common in the wet rainy season

Measures:

Prune for good airflow

Spray contact or systemic fungicides (early stage)

2. Cercospora leaf spot

  • Round greyish-brown spots appear on leaves
  • Causes mass leaf drop → affects flowering and fruit set

Measures:

Spray preventively early; rotate active ingredients

Add micronutrient fertiliser to strengthen resistance

Suggested pest and disease management calendar

StageMain pests and diseasesSuggested treatment
Start of rainy seasonAphids, leaf spotPreventive spray with systemic product + adjuvant
Mid rainy seasonMealybugs, pink diseaseUse Pilaravia 155SC + Viet-up 90
End of rainy seasonStem borers, leaf spotGarden sanitation, preventive spray + foliar fertiliser

Tips for better pest and disease control

✅ Rotate active ingredients to avoid resistance

✅ Spray at the right time – low densities are easier to control

✅ Do not spray in rain or strong sun

✅ Add the Viet-up 90 sticker to reduce wash-off and save costs
