Mealybugs – a hidden threat to many crops
Mealybugs (scientific name: Pseudococcidae) are among the most damaging and hard-to-control pests in Vietnamese agriculture. They commonly appear in many fruit and long-term industrial crop areas such as durian, coffee, pepper, dragon fruit, jackfruit and mango, directly affecting yield and produce quality.
###

Morphological features for identifying mealybugs
- Small, soft, oval body, about 1–5 mm long depending on the species.
- Covered with a cotton-like white wax layer, easily mistaken for fungus or other insects' silk.
- Can cling tightly to young leaves, young shoots, fruit stalks, stems, leaf sheaths or even the root zone.
- Some species have long wax filaments at the tail, visible to the naked eye.
Because of the thick wax layer and hidden locations, sprays against mealybugs are often less effective without penetrating, systemic action.
Mealybug life cycle
| Stage | Biological characteristics |
|---|---|
| Eggs | Laid in clusters, hidden in the wax layer, very hard to detect |
| Nymphs | Actively mobile, very damaging, suck sap from young shoots and leaf veins |
| Adults | Continuous damage, settle and suck sap; adult females keep reproducing |

- The life cycle lasts 21–35 days depending on temperature and humidity.
- Mealybugs reproduce very quickly; one female can lay hundreds of eggs.
- In addition, they reproduce both sexually and asexually, so numbers can explode in a short time if not controlled in time.
Why are mealybugs dangerous?
- Continuous sap sucking causes yellow leaves, fruit drop and slow growth.
- Honeydew secretion → causes sooty mould → reduces photosynthesis.
- They are vectors of dangerous viruses on many crops.
- They can live in symbiosis with black ants, helping them spread across the orchard.
Early signs of mealybug presence
- Curled young leaves, stunted young shoots, faint white streaks.
- Cotton-like white clusters on stems and fruit stalks.
- Many black ants around the stem or roots.
- Leaves with black streaks (sooty mould) of unclear cause – check the base of the plant.
Summary
Understanding the characteristics and life cycle of mealybugs is an important first step in building an effective control strategy. To control mealybugs well, choose a deeply systemic product that reaches where mealybugs hide deep in plant tissue.
