The weed problem in sugarcane
Sugarcane has been regarded as a key crop in the Central Highlands provinces in general and Gia Lai province in particular in recent years. In the Đông Trường Sơn area, stretching from An Khê town through Kbang, Đăk Pơ, Kông Chro and Ia Pa districts and Ayun Pa town to Krông pa, home to the largest sugarcane fields in the country with more than 50.000ha of raw-material cane, the sugarcane fields have now been harvested and are entering the young-plant care stage.
Returning to the Đông Trường Sơn area, the first rains of the season have turned the sugarcane fields lush green. The rains have partly relieved the drought for sugarcane farmers. However, the early rains have also given many households a headache because of the vigorous growth of weeds in the fields.
Along with common pests and diseases such as stem borers, woolly aphids and smut…, weeds are one of the most damaging problems in sugarcane fields. In particular, when the cane is still small and the canopy has not closed, conditions favour the spread of many weeds such as annual weeds, perennial weeds, broadleaf weeds and narrow-leaf weeds… Weeds not only compete for nutrients but also host many pests and diseases.
To limit weeds, besides manual cultivation measures such as collecting weeds thoroughly before land preparation and ploughing and harrowing well to bury weed seeds deep in the soil…, the use of herbicides is essential.
