Planting and caring for high-yield, sustainable pepper

Ideal growing conditions for pepper

Pepper grows well with:

  • Temperature: 25–28°C
  • Rainfall: 2.000–2.500mm/year, with good drainage
  • Soil: Red basalt soil, loose, pH 5.5–6.5
  • Light: enough sun, with light shade in the first 1–2 years

Pepper planted in low-lying, waterlogged or nutrient-poor soil is prone to quick wilt and slow decline.

Planting pepper – the stage that decides 80% of success

✅ 1. Preparing support posts

  • Living posts: kapok, muồng đen (Senna siamea), keo dậu (Leucaena) – provide windbreak; soft bark is easy to climb
  • Dead posts: concrete or hardwood stakes – 3–4m high, buried 60–70cm deep

✅ 2. Digging holes – preparing the soil

  • Hole size: 60x60x60cm
  • Mix topsoil with 10–15kg well-composted manure + 0.5kg lime + 0.5kg phosphate
  • Leave for 20–30 days beforehand to treat pathogens

✅ 3. Planting cuttings

  • Choose healthy cuttings with good dormant buds, free of pests and diseases
  • Plant 10–15cm from the post and tie loosely to it
  • Shade for the first 1–2 months; water to keep moist

Caring for pepper – from rooting to fruiting

1. Fertilising – balanced nutrition

StageFertiliser typeSuggested rate
Years 1–2Manure + NPK 16-16-8 + micronutrients2–3 applications/year
Year 3 onwardsNPK + KNO₃ + microbial fertiliser3–4 applications/year, plus foliar fertiliser

Add Viet-up 90 when spraying foliar fertiliser for good adhesion and fast penetration, especially in the rainy season.

2. Watering and keeping moisture

  • Dry season: water 2–3 times/week
  • Rainy season: ensure fast drainage
  • Mulch the base with straw or dry leaves to reduce evaporation

3. Pruning – shaping the canopy

  • Remove water shoots, diseased branches and branches growing inside the canopy
  • Keep the canopy open for easier spraying and even light

4. Regular pest and disease prevention
