Standard coffee planting technique – for healthy trees and strong yields

Coffee – a key crop that needs the right technique from the start

Coffee is a long-lived industrial crop. It is easy to grow, but to achieve stable yields and high quality, growers need to master the techniques from planting through to care.

Stages of coffee care

1. Preparing soil and planting material

  • Suitable soil: red basalt soil, well drained, pH 5.5–6.5
  • Soil preparation: plough deeply; raise beds 30–40cm high in low-lying areas
  • Planting holes: 50x50x50cm, base dressing of 5–10kg well-composted organic fertiliser/hole
  • Recommended varieties: Robusta or Arabica suited to the area, disease-free, survival rate > 95%

2. Density and planting

VarietySpacingTrees/ha
Robusta3m x 3m or 3,5m x 3,5m~1000–1200
Arabica2,5m x 2,5m or 2m x 3m~1300–1600

Plant at the start of the rainy season so trees establish under favourable conditions.

3. Watering and weeding

  • Trees need regular water in the dry season (especially at flowering and fruit set)
  • Use drip or rotational irrigation; do not leave trees in drought for too long
  • Weed every 2 months and mulch the base with dry grass or straw to retain moisture

4. Fertilising by stage

StageFertiliser typeSuggested amount (kg/tree/year)
Establishment (1–3 years)Organic + NPK15–20kg organic fertiliser + 0.5kg NPK 16-16-8
Production (after year 4)NPK + micronutrient fertiliser25–30kg organic + 1–1.5kg NPK 20-20-15 + TE

Split into 3–4 applications/year: start of rainy season – after flowering – after harvest – end of dry season.

5. Canopy shaping – pruning

  • First shaping: 3–4 months after planting
  • Annual pruning: keeps trees open and limits pests and diseases

6. Pest and disease management

Common problems:

  • Mealybugs, aphids: stunted tips, reduced yield
  • Anthracnose, pink disease, leaf spot: leaf drop, reduced ability to support fruit
