Broadleaf weeds, grasses, sedges – Which harms sugarcane fields most?

Growing cane but… "feeding weeds"?

It sounds like a joke, but it is a real problem for sugarcane growers:

"After fertilising, watering and spraying… the weeds are fat and the cane is thin!"

The problem is not cane-growing technique, but not identifying the weeds correctly to choose the right product. Some weeds must be treated from the start; others are very persistent and need a specialised product.

The 3 most common weed groups in sugarcane fields

Weed groupCharacteristicsHarmExamples
Grasses (narrow-leaf)Straight leaves, upright growthShade the crop, compete for light – take up nitrogen very quicklyCỏ chỉ, cỏ cú
Broadleaf weedsLarge leaves, creeping growthCreate shade – shelter for pests and diseasesCỏ xuyến chi, cỏ lác, cỏ gà
Sedges (Cyperus spp.)Fibrous roots, spread by underground stemsVery hard to control, persistent – crowd cane rootsBrown sedge, white sedge
Of the 3 groups, sedges are the most damaging, because they regrow very quickly if not controlled down to the roots.

With hand weeding only or the wrong spray – weeds regrow within 7–10 days

  • Underground roots survive → stronger regrowth
  • Wrong target → only the tops die, not the roots
  • Persistent weeds → the cane is completely overtaken

✅ Controlling all 3 weed groups – with low risk to young cane

Use a broad-spectrum herbicide that controls broadleaf weeds, grasses and sedges

Prefer pre-emergence or early post-planting products that do not burn the cane

Add a sticker adjuvant – for deeper penetration

Xinron 800WG is one option:

Controls broadleaf weeds, grasses and sedges

Does not affect the cane when used as directed

Long-lasting activity – less regrowth

Works in both the dry and the rainy season
