Why Thailand is importing more Vietnamese durian
In the first 4 months of this year, Thailand was the largest importer of Vietnamese durian, with frozen durian the most imported item. Vietnam is following the trend of processing durian using freezing technology. Thailand increased imports of Vietnamese durian because it had not yet entered its main harvest season at that time. In addition, Vietnamese durian appeals to the Thai market for its quality, price and processing format. Vietnamese businesses currently hope to sign a protocol with China soon to export frozen durian, opening up opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products.
Vietnamese agricultural exports received good news when watermelon was granted a protocol for official export to China on 12/6. In Shanghai, watermelon is a common dessert popular with Chinese consumers. Meanwhile, the Vietnamese agricultural sector also faces worrying news: Thailand is pushing to reduce logistics costs for durian exports to China. Specifically, Thailand is connecting high-speed rail with Laos, from Vientiane to Kunming, cutting transport time to 15 hours instead of 2 days as before, which means lower logistics costs. Vietnamese businesses therefore need to pay attention to logistics, as it directly affects product costs in the agricultural competition between Vietnam and Thailand.
