"I nearly gave up on my durian orchard because of sap-sucking leafhoppers…"
That is the honest account of Mr Thương, a durian grower in Phụng Hiệp, Hậu Giang – an area hit hard by sap-sucking leafhoppers last year.
"The trees wouldn't grow; every new flush curled and the young shoots shrivelled. I sprayed products from many brands, every 7–10 days, but the leafhoppers were still all over the shoots and leaf undersides."
Sap-sucking leafhoppers – small but very damaging
Sap-sucking leafhoppers are insects with piercing mouthparts that suck sap from young leaves, young shoots and fruit stalks, causing:
- Young shoots to dry black – leaves fail to open
- Leaves to curl, discolour and drop early
- Fruit to drop young or develop slowly
- Trees to grow slowly and become prone to fungi and viruses afterwards
In the wet rainy season, leafhopper numbers rise sharply and they hide well under leaves and in shaded spots, so contact sprays have little effect.
Mr Thương's choice: Pilaravia 155SC + Viet-up 90
After a recommendation from his input dealer, Mr Thương switched to trying 2 tanks mixed as recommended:
- Pilaravia 155SC: 25ml/25-litre tank
- Viet-up 90: 20ml/25-litre tank (sticker – penetrant adjuvant)
He sprayed early in the morning, thoroughly covering the canopy – shoots – leaf undersides and the base.

Results after 2 treatments
"I checked after 2 treatments: the young shoots turned green again and opened evenly. The leafhoppers weren't like before. The leaf undersides were clean. It was the first time I'd seen the trees recover so fast."
Mr Thương carried out the 2nd treatment after 7 days → the trees recovered, shoots grew evenly and leaves were lush green.
✅ Why does Pilaravia 155SC work on sap-sucking leafhoppers?
| Mode of action | Practical effect |
|---|---|
| Two-way systemic | The active ingredient moves leaf → root, root → leaf → reaching leafhoppers wherever they are |
| Fast penetration through the leaf epidermis | Acts on leafhoppers under leaves and in shaded spots |
| Strong – long-lasting efficacy | Reduces leafhopper numbers quickly, helps prevent resurgence |
| Gentle on crops when used as directed | No leaf curl, no effect on growth |
Lessons for growers
- Don't wait until leafhopper damage is severe – detect early and spray at the right time for better results.
- Combining the right product with the right adjuvant gives better results.
- For high-value fruit crops such as durian, coffee and mango, using the right solution can protect not only the trees but the whole season.
Suggested programme for sap-sucking leafhoppers with Pilaravia:
- Spray Pilaravia 155SC + Viet-up 90 as soon as the first signs appear
- Frequency: 2 sprays 5–7 days apart, then maintain every 14 days
- Spray evenly to wet the canopy – leaves – shoots – base
