Coffee in the establishment phase – Caring correctly for healthy trees
The "golden" phase that decides a coffee garden's success
The establishment phase runs from planting to year 3, when the tree:
- Develops its root system and canopy
- Builds a strong canopy frame
- Starts bearing fruit from year 3–4
With correct care during this phase, trees develop evenly, have fewer pests and diseases and give stable yields from year 4 onwards.
Tasks during the establishment phase
1. Shaping the canopy – correct pruning
- Top the tree at about 50–60cm to produce primary branches
- Keep 3–4 strong, evenly spaced primary branches
- Remove water shoots, weak branches and clustered branches to keep the tree open
2. Fertilising for stem and root growth
| Timing | Fertiliser type | Suggested rate |
|---|---|---|
| 1 month after planting | Organic fertiliser + NPK 16-16-8 | 0.2–0.3kg/tree/application |
| After 3 months | NPK + micronutrients (Mg, B, Zn) | 0.3–0.5kg/tree/application |
| End of year | Well-composted organic matter + dolomite lime | Improves soil, helps the tree recover |
Apply around the canopy edge, lightly work into the soil and water for better uptake.
3. Pest and disease prevention – protecting trees early
| Common pests and diseases | Management |
|---|---|
| Mealybugs, aphids | Use Pilaravia 155SC + Viet-up 90 for systemic action and good adhesion |
| Pink disease, root rot | Drench with copper-based products + add beneficial microbes |
| Nematodes | Improve the soil; intercrop with nematode-repelling plants such as marigold |
Watering and mulching
- In the early phase, keep the soil continuously moist
- Mulch with dry grass or straw to retain moisture and limit weeds
Important notes for the establishment phase
✅ Do not apply fertiliser right against the trunk → risk of root burn
✅ Do not let weeds overtake the trees
✅ Do not let pests and diseases build up → they spread through the garden
