Anthracnose – a silent but serious threat to the crop

Anthracnose is one of the most common diseases of crops in Vietnam and can be serious, especially in the rainy season or high humidity. It is caused by fungi of the genus Colletotrichum spp., which can enter quickly and spread widely through wind, rain, farm tools or plant residue.

Effects of anthracnose on crops

  • Causes young shoot drop, leaf blight, stem cracking, branch dieback
  • Fruit rots black, develops deep lesions, drops early
  • Reduces yield and market value
  • Can cause losses of 20–60% if not detected and treated in time

Symptoms of anthracnose by stage and plant part

Infected partEarly signsProgressionCommon confusion
Young leavesSmall round light-brown spotsSpots spread with black margins – leaf blightConfused with leaf scorch from micronutrient deficiency
Young/mature fruitSlightly sunken black spots, usually at the stalkDeep, slimy lesions spreading around the fruit – fruit dropsConfused with bacterial fruit rot
Branches/young shootsSlight, slightly sunken scorchingBranches dry black, shoots die backConfused with Botryodiplodia branch rot

Crops commonly attacked by anthracnose

  • Mango: young fruit with blackened stalks, mass drop
  • Durian: young shoots die black, flowers scorch, fruit blackens in patches
  • Coffee: early leaf drop, mottled black berries
  • Pepper: young shoots fail to develop, flower drop
  • Watermelon, chilli, tomato: fruit rot from flowering to harvest

Why is anthracnose hard to control with ordinary products?

  • The fungus invades from internal tissue: contact products wash off easily and cannot reach the infection.
  • Thrives in humid, rainy weather → conditions favour rapid spread.
  • Survives in old wounds, fallen leaves and tree bases → recurs easily without hygiene and regular prevention.

✅ Recommended approach: Early prevention – use a broad-spectrum systemic product

To manage anthracnose effectively, specialists recommend:

  • Pruning for an open canopy and regular orchard hygiene
  • Balanced fertilisation, avoiding excess nitrogen
  • Spraying a broad-spectrum fungicide with systemic action and a broad spectrum, for both prevention and treatment Read more: https://vietcropchem.com/tin_tuc/Tac-hai-cua-benh-than-thu-va-toc-do-lay-lan-nhanh-tren-cay-trong SEO keywords used in this article
